This week is the week of the Forum, where all of the CBL groups present their findings and projects. A few days ago, we sent out a survey to our fellow Windward students asking many different things. For the most part, the responses were very positive. But, we could tell that some of the responses were not very accurate. For example, 14.4% of people that were surveyed said that they put their phones away 30 minutes before bed. While this could be accurate, it does not seem likely.
We are very excited to see what others think of our project. We are willing to take any and all feedback to upgrade our prototype. The Forum went great! We got some amazing feedback. One parent asked us about the radiation from phones and how that could affect the people using this product. This great feedback gave us an idea for a future design, where we could possibly make a cover for the alarm. We could also make the alarm turn on and off by using an actual timer/clock. We thank everyone for their support and hope to continue making better versions of this product. This week we started building our first prototype. We he built the first casing for both the alarm mechanism, and the phone. We are now designing our circuit to make the speaker work, only when the phone is rested on the alarm. In the first couple days we discussed how we are going to build the circuit, and worked on our website.
Our last revision of our idea was to make a box with holes on the top, and build a phone case with shapes that will correspond with the cut out holes. We are going to have a clock in the front, and have a circuit in the back with a speaker which plays an alarm until the phone is placed on the alarm. Next week, we plan to build the prototype that we will be presenting. We make the new circuit idea, and have the alarm only stoppable by the phone. We will continue building our model and will have a presentable model by friday. This week we have finalized our idea to build an alarm that does not turn off until you place your phone on top. We have been prototyping with TinkerCad, building models to prepare to 3D print these cases. We have also been thinking about expanding on current IPhone cases on Thingiverse. We have also considered adding a popsocket to the case. We went with the idea of just using a normal clock instead of an alarm.
We are encountering some problems though. We are wondering how many models we can make in the limited amount of time that we have. There are different things to factor into this case: brand of the phone (Apple, Samsung, etc), type of phone (IPhone 6, IPhone 5,etc), and other things. Our idea has progressed from a self dimming light app on your phone, to a self dimming headlight, all the way to an alarm clock that goes off every thirty seconds before you go to sleep until you place your phone on it. Throughout this process we have experienced some difficulties. It turns out a self dimming headlight already exist. In fact, our science teacher actually owns a self dimming headlight... That's when we had to make a decision. We either stuck with the self dimming light and just wait for people to tell us that it is already a thing, or we would come up with a completely new idea. And that is how we came up with the alarm clock that goes off every thirty seconds when it is I've for you to sleep and the only way to turn it off is to Put your phone on top of it. Our next challenge was: How are we going to build it? So we contacted some of my dads friends who are really into engineering. We learned that our idea was very creative and innovative. Not to mention it is also pretty easy to build. After some rethinking, we decided that an alarm clock that goes off at your bedtime. But here's the catch. It will only stop buzzing if you place your phone on it. It goes off every thirty seconds until you get tired of that alarm noise and place your phone on top of it. Not to mention it also charges your phone at the same time. Way to kill two birds with one stone. This makes you to get of of your phone at night. And your sleep will be more effective. Once you are off of your device, your brain becomes less active, allowing you to fall asleep more quickly and get a longer better quality sleep 40.6 million Americans are sleep deprived each year. Of those 40.6 million Americans, 90% of teenagers are sleep deprived. This is a problem. So, we have chosen to work on improving people's sleep and we have chosen the subcategory of sleep hygiene.
Our idea started out with a worldwide problem. Not enough sleep. From there we did our research and in our analysis about sleep hygiene, we noticed that exposure to light before bedtime decreases the quality of sleep, and also causes people to stay awake longer. This makes sleep both shorter and less effective. Our first idea was to make a self - dimming light on an iPhone. Basically, we were going to make an app that slowly dimmed the screen light on your phone half an hour before your bedtime so your brain gets more tired and in “sleep mode”. Then, it would just power off your phone so you can focus on getting ready to go to sleep. The mentors giving us feedback had a point. The app involved too much security. What if there was a problem turning the phone back on? Would they have to reconnect to wifi everyday? How exactly are you going to code all of this? So we scratched that idea. Instead, we came up with a better idea of creating a self dimming headlight. We took the feedback into consideration and came up with a more simple, yet innovative idea. |
